Paytm’s founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma stood before a crowd of innovators and policymakers at the India Mobile Congress 2025, holding a small blue device that he claimed would redefine merchant technology in India. The Paytm AI Soundbox—a “Made-in-India” innovation—symbolizes how artificial intelligence can uplift millions of small businesses across the country.
Paytm built the Soundbox to empower shopkeepers, kirana owners, and street vendors who depend on digital payments every day. Instead of focusing on flashy features for big enterprises, Paytm focused on the grassroots—the small entrepreneur who forms the real backbone of India’s digital economy.
The Idea Behind the AI Soundbox
Paytm already changed how India pays and receives money. Its earlier Soundbox—introduced in 2019—became a common sight at tea stalls, pharmacies, and grocery shops. It read out payment confirmations instantly, which helped merchants avoid fake screenshots and errors.
Now, the new AI Soundbox moves far beyond just reading payment alerts. It uses voice intelligence and contextual AI to help merchants manage their businesses smarter. Sharma explained that the device can now do more than just confirm transactions—it can answer merchant queries, suggest inventory restocking tips, and even provide personalized financial insights.
“Every kirana shop in India can now own its own intelligent assistant,” Sharma said while demonstrating the Soundbox to Union Minister Piyush Goyal. “We want AI to work for small merchants, not just for large corporations.”
How the AI Soundbox Works
The new Soundbox runs on a custom Paytm OS built on Android Things. It connects directly to the merchant’s Paytm Business app through Wi-Fi or mobile data. The device recognizes voice commands in English, Hindi, and several regional languages like Tamil, Telugu, and Bengali.
A merchant can say:
“Soundbox, what were my total payments today?”
or
“Soundbox, send me a summary of the last 50 transactions.”
Within seconds, the device reads out and displays the requested data on its small digital screen.
Paytm’s AI layer processes these commands locally using on-device machine learning, which means the device doesn’t need to send every query to the cloud. This local processing improves speed and reduces dependence on the internet, which remains inconsistent in many rural areas.
A Smarter Tool for Small Businesses
Paytm designed the new Soundbox to act as a micro-business assistant. It records daily earnings, provides credit reminders, and sends automatic insights about customer patterns. If the AI detects slower-than-usual payments or frequent refunds, it alerts the merchant to check for possible issues.
It also supports inventory assistance through integration with Paytm’s merchant software. When a merchant sells a product repeatedly, the device can remind them to restock before demand peaks again. For example, if a small tea stall owner sells out of sugar or milk faster than usual, the Soundbox prompts a gentle reminder to reorder supplies.
This level of proactive support makes the AI Soundbox stand out. It converts a simple speaker into a smart advisor for the smallest players in India’s vast retail landscape.
Local Manufacturing and Sustainability
Paytm built the Soundbox entirely in India under its “Make in India” initiative. The manufacturing happens at a facility in Noida, which uses mostly local components and employs hundreds of workers.
The company also replaced the earlier plastic-heavy design with a sustainable bio-composite casing. Engineers reduced energy consumption by almost 30%, and the rechargeable battery lasts for more than five days without power.
Paytm engineers emphasized that the device’s design draws inspiration from India’s small-town realities. They created a rugged exterior that can withstand heat, dust, and humidity—conditions that often damage electronics in roadside shops.
Integration with Paytm Ecosystem
The AI Soundbox links directly to Paytm’s wider suite of services. Merchants who use Paytm QR codes or Paytm Business can now access their loan eligibility, marketing tools, and insurance plans directly through the Soundbox.
For example, when a shopkeeper reaches a certain transaction volume, the Soundbox automatically informs them that they qualify for an instant working capital loan. Similarly, if a merchant shows consistent digital payment activity, Paytm’s AI can recommend low-cost insurance or merchant credit cards through voice prompts.
Sharma believes that AI-driven inclusion can help India bridge its financial gap faster than ever. “We don’t just want to give credit to merchants—we want to teach them how to grow responsibly,” he said during the launch.
AI, Voice Tech, and the Future of Payments
The Soundbox uses Paytm’s IndiVoice AI model, trained on millions of hours of localized speech data. This model can understand colloquial speech, dialects, and mixed-language sentences.
For example, if a merchant says, “Mujhe kal ke paise ka total batao” (“Tell me yesterday’s total”), the AI responds correctly even when part of the sentence mixes Hindi and English.
Paytm claims that its model outperforms general-purpose assistants like Alexa or Google Assistant for business-specific tasks in noisy, real-world settings. The system can filter background noise from street chatter, traffic, and other shop sounds.
This combination of AI, natural language understanding, and localized voice processing gives Paytm a major advantage in India’s growing digital payment ecosystem.
Empowering the Smallest Players
At its core, the AI Soundbox doesn’t target corporate clients—it serves the informal economy. More than 30 million small merchants use Paytm daily. Most of them don’t own advanced smartphones or have the time to manage data-heavy apps.
The Soundbox offers a hands-free, voice-first interface, which fits perfectly with their workflow. Instead of scrolling through screens, they can talk to the device as they serve customers.
A vegetable vendor in Delhi told reporters, “Earlier I used to check my Paytm app at night to see the total. Now I just ask the Soundbox before closing the stall.”
These small improvements create big behavioral changes. The more merchants interact with the Soundbox, the more data Paytm gathers to refine credit scoring, sales forecasting, and financial education models.
Strategic Advantage and Competition
Paytm’s move also strengthens its position against competitors like PhonePe and BharatPe, which still rely on simpler audio alert devices. By introducing AI-based intelligence into everyday merchant hardware, Paytm differentiates itself as not just a payments company but an AI-driven financial ecosystem.
The Soundbox may also help Paytm capture new data streams that can feed its credit and lending businesses. Since the AI device logs voice queries and behavioral patterns (with user consent), Paytm can better understand merchant needs and tailor financial products dynamically.
Industry experts already view the AI Soundbox as a strategic innovation that pushes the entire fintech sector toward intelligent automation.
The Human Touch in AI
Despite all the technology inside, Sharma emphasized that the Soundbox still centers on the human experience. “AI should not intimidate small merchants,” he said. “It should feel like talking to a friendly helper who knows your business.”
To ensure that comfort, Paytm tested the device in 100 towns before launch. Engineers collected merchant feedback, adjusted voice tone, and even added humor to responses. When asked about low sales, the Soundbox sometimes replies, “Aaj thoda slow hai, par kal better hoga!” (“Today’s a bit slow, but tomorrow will be better!”).
This warmth transforms AI from a cold machine into a friendly companion for hardworking business owners.
Looking Ahead
Paytm plans to ship over one million AI Soundboxes in the next six months. The company also intends to expand regional language support and add integrations with UPI Lite, Paytm Credit Cards, and third-party accounting tools.
If adoption continues at its current pace, the AI Soundbox could redefine how India’s 60 million micro-entrepreneurs manage payments and business intelligence. It could also position India as a global pioneer in AI for micro-enterprise empowerment.
As Sharma concluded at the launch, “India doesn’t just consume technology anymore. We create it, localize it, and share it with the world.”
