XDLINX Space Labs, a Hyderabad-based space startup, has successfully completed a $7 million seed funding round. This funding will fuel the company’s ambition to build advanced payloads for both defense and commercial missions. The round was led by Ashish Kacholia of Lucky Investments, with additional support from E2MC, Mana Ventures, and a prominent family office.

Redefining Space Missions with Advanced Payloads

Founded in 2022, XDLINX Space Labs entered the space industry with a bold vision—to redefine how space missions are conducted. The startup aims to make innovative satellite technology accessible to a broader range of clients by building cost-effective payloads and satellite systems.

Rupesh Gandupalli, CEO & Co-Founder of XDLINX Space Labs, expressed his excitement about the funding. “This investment will accelerate the manufacturing of next-generation payloads for defense and commercial missions,” Gandupalli stated. “We are focusing on capabilities like E-band communications, Optical and RF intelligence, and satellite bus platforms to expand our presence in the US and the UK.”

A Successful Start: The Launch of JANUS-1

One of XDLINX’s first significant milestones was the successful launch of JANUS-1, a 6U Nanosat. This software-defined satellite demonstrated the company’s expertise in multi-tenancy payload capabilities. Launched aboard ISRO’s SSLV-D2 rocket in February last year, JANUS-1 was a crucial proof-of-concept mission that validated XDLINX’s technology.

JANUS-1 showcased the potential of software-defined satellites to adapt to changing mission requirements. The ability to reconfigure payloads on the fly enables greater flexibility and reduces the cost of space missions. This innovation sets XDLINX apart from traditional satellite manufacturers, making it a key player in the evolving space industry.

Building Space Heritage: A Focus on E-band Communications

With the new funding, XDLINX is gearing up for its next big project—Elevation-1. Scheduled to launch aboard SpaceX’s Transporter-12 mission, Elevation-1 will feature the world’s first miniaturized space-grade E-band payload. This payload is designed to demonstrate E-band communications using digital modulation.

E-band, which operates in the 71-76 GHz and 81-86 GHz frequency range, offers much higher data rates than traditional communication bands. It is poised to revolutionize satellite communication by enabling data rates exceeding 10 Gbps. Elevation-1 will be the first commercial mission to test this technology in space.

This mission will pave the way for XDLINX to develop next-generation communication payloads that can meet the growing demand for high-speed data transfer in space. Successful demonstration of E-band communications will open up new possibilities for satellite networks, especially in the areas of earth observation, telecommunications, and deep space communication.

A Long-Term Vision: Scaling Up Satellite Platforms

XDLINX is not just focusing on payloads; it is also developing entire satellite platforms. The company is currently working on a 150 kg class satellite called XDSAT-M600. This satellite will host Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and Multi-Spectral optical sensors, making it a versatile platform for earth observation and remote sensing missions.

The XDSAT-M600 platform is being developed for a customer and is scheduled for launch next year. It combines high-resolution SAR and optical imaging capabilities, enabling detailed analysis of the earth’s surface. This is particularly useful for applications in agriculture, disaster management, and environmental monitoring.

SAR technology allows satellites to capture images regardless of weather conditions, making it ideal for continuous monitoring. When combined with Multi-Spectral optical sensors, it provides comprehensive data that can be used for a variety of commercial and scientific purposes.

75% Indigenous Subsystems: Making Space Accessible

XDLINX aims to make space more accessible by building satellites using 75% indigenous subsystems. This approach not only reduces costs but also strengthens the local supply chain for space components. By leveraging local expertise and resources, XDLINX is contributing to India’s growing role in the global space industry.

“We envision a future where space becomes more accessible. Our goal is to build cost-effective satellites using a majority of indigenous subsystems,” Gandupalli emphasized. This strategy aligns with the Indian government’s push for self-reliance in the space sector and supports the growth of a robust space ecosystem in the country.

Expanding to Global Markets: Focus on the US and the UK

The funding will also help XDLINX expand its presence in international markets, particularly in the US and the UK. The startup sees significant opportunities in these regions, where demand for advanced satellite technologies is on the rise.

Establishing a foothold in these markets will not only increase XDLINX’s revenue but also enhance its credibility as a global player in satellite technology. Collaborations with international partners will enable the company to access cutting-edge technologies and tap into new customer segments.

Backing from Strategic Investors

The $7 million seed round was led by prominent investor Ashish Kacholia of Lucky Investments, known for his interest in innovative companies. E2MC, a leading venture capital firm focused on space technologies, and Mana Ventures, along with a family office, also participated in the round.

The involvement of these strategic investors brings more than just capital. Their industry expertise and network will provide XDLINX with the guidance needed to scale its operations and execute complex projects. With their support, XDLINX is well-positioned to achieve its ambitious goals.

A Rapidly Evolving Space Startup Ecosystem

India’s space startup ecosystem has been growing rapidly, thanks to government support and increasing private investment. The Indian government’s decision to open the space sector to private players has led to a surge in startups focusing on everything from satellite manufacturing to launch services.

XDLINX is part of this wave of innovation. With its focus on building next-generation payloads and satellite platforms, the company is pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the Indian space industry. The recent funding will enable XDLINX to continue innovating and contribute to the growth of the country’s space sector.

Developing Technologies for Defense and Commercial Applications

The dual focus on defense and commercial applications is a key differentiator for XDLINX. Defense missions require robust and secure communication systems, while commercial missions demand cost-effective and high-performance payloads. By catering to both segments, XDLINX is diversifying its revenue streams and building a sustainable business model.

The company’s expertise in RF intelligence, optical payloads, and advanced communication technologies makes it a valuable partner for both government and private entities. With defense budgets increasing globally and the commercial satellite market expanding, XDLINX is poised for significant growth in the coming years.

The Path Forward: Roadmap and Future Plans

Looking ahead, XDLINX has a clear roadmap for growth. The company plans to scale its manufacturing capabilities and develop more advanced satellite platforms. It will also focus on building space heritage, which refers to the proven reliability of a satellite system in space. This is critical for gaining customer trust and winning contracts for complex missions.

The upcoming launch of Elevation-1 will be a major milestone for the company. Success in this mission will validate XDLINX’s E-band communication technology and set the stage for future projects. The company is already working on the next iterations of its payloads, which will offer even higher data rates and more robust performance.

Contributing to India’s Space Ambitions

XDLINX is contributing to India’s space ambitions by building innovative technologies that can compete on a global scale. The company’s focus on indigenous development, combined with its commitment to innovation, positions it as a key player in the Indian space industry.

The startup’s efforts align with the Indian government’s vision of making the country a global hub for space technology. With continued support from investors and strategic partnerships, XDLINX is set to play a vital role in shaping the future of space exploration and satellite technology in India.
