In a bid to bolster its position as a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has set an ambitious goal to incubate a minimum of 100 startups across diverse sectors in the year 2024. This initiative is spearheaded by the IIT Madras Incubation Cell (IITMIC), recognized as one of India’s premier deep-tech startup ecosystems.

Reflecting on the accomplishments of 2023, V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, highlighted the realization of significant ambitions. These included the establishment of the IITM Zanzibar Campus, marking a historic milestone as the first-ever IIT to be established overseas. Additionally, the institute launched a Department of Medical Sciences and Technology and expressed aspirations for further initiatives, including the introduction of a new school focused on interdisciplinary sciences.

Emphasizing the shift towards interdisciplinary education, Kamakoti underlined the importance of nurturing innovation across various domains. The institute is keen on concluding the financial year with an array of projects, aiming to maximize its impact on both the academic and entrepreneurial fronts.

IIT Madras Targets 100 Startups in 2024

Underscoring its commitment to fostering a vibrant startup ecosystem, IIT Madras aims to kickstart 100 startups in the year 2024. Notable contributions are expected from existing incubated startups like the Hyperloop startup, ePlane, Agnikul Cosmos, and Mindgrove Technologies. These startups, with roots in IIT Madras, are poised to deliver products of national significance.

In 2023, IIT Madras made history by becoming the first IIT to establish a campus in a foreign country. The IITM Zanzibar Campus initially offers Bachelor of Science (BS) and Master of Technology (MTech) programs in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. The first batch comprises students from Zanzibar, mainland Tanzania, Nepal, and India, with a noteworthy 40% representation of women.
