South African HR startup Jem HR has raised $8.4 million in Series A funding as it seeks to expand its platform for frontline workers. The company has built its service around a simple idea: give workers access to important HR services through WhatsApp.
The new capital can help Jem HR move beyond basic HR tasks and build a wider workforce platform. Its goal is to help companies manage staff while also give employees access to useful services such as pay details and financial benefits.
The company has focused on a group that many large HR software firms often miss: workers who do not sit at a desk or use a work email each day. This includes people in sectors such as retail, security, logistics, manufacturing and other jobs where staff spend most of their time away from an office. Jem HR has built its product around this reality.
A Simple Idea Behind the Company
Jem HR was founded in 2019 under the name SmartWage. The company later changed its name to Jem HR in 2022.
Its first product had a clear purpose. It allowed workers to get access to part of their earned wages before the usual payday. This type of service is known as earned wage access.
The idea came from a real problem. Many workers can face money pressure before payday, even when they have already earned part of their salary. Early access to wages can help them deal with short-term costs without the need for expensive loans.
Jem HR later saw that the same workers also needed easier access to other workplace services. The company then expanded its product beyond wage access and added tools for HR, payroll, communication and employee benefits.
Why WhatsApp Is Central to Jem HR
The company’s use of WhatsApp is one of its main differences.
Many HR platforms assume that employees have a company email address, a computer or a special workplace app. That does not work well for many frontline workers.
Jem HR chose a service that people already know and use. Through WhatsApp, employees can receive company messages, view payslips, request leave and access financial wellness services.
This can make HR much easier for workers who do not have regular access to office systems. It can also help employers reach staff across many sites without the need for a separate app.
Jem itself says its focus is on people who work away from desks. Its career site states that 75% of South Africa’s employed population works on the front line, while only 1% of enterprise technology is built for frontline workers.
The Problem With Deskless Work
The term “deskless worker” refers to people whose jobs do not take place at a desk with regular access to a computer.
This group is large. It includes security guards, shop staff, factory workers, cleaners, drivers, warehouse staff and many others.
For these employees, simple tasks can become harder than they should be. A worker may need a payslip but have no work email. Another person may need to ask for leave but have no company computer. Someone else may need a company message but may not check an office portal.
Jem HR tries to solve these gaps through a familiar mobile service.
The company has said that deskless workers can also face issues such as low wages, unreliable transport and safety concerns. These problems can affect both their work and personal lives.
A Platform for Employers and Workers
Jem HR does not focus only on employees. Its platform also aims to make HR work easier for companies.
Employers can use the system for tasks such as payroll access, leave management, timesheets and company communication.
This can reduce manual work for HR teams. Instead of paper documents or separate systems, companies can use one digital channel to reach a large frontline workforce.
The company has already built a customer base across several industries. Its clients have included names such as Securitas, Edgars and KFC, according to Business Day.
Jem HR has also said that its platform serves more than 150,000 employees across more than 150 companies. Its users include people in security, mining, retail, manufacturing and logistics.
Financial Services Add More Value
Jem HR’s product goes beyond normal HR software.
The company wants to give frontline employees access to financial tools that can help them manage their money better. Its earlier product, earned wage access, is part of this wider plan.
The company has also planned services such as a savings tool, low-cost insurance, credit score support and a financial wellness helpline. It has also looked at extra services such as airtime and data bundles.
This mix of HR and financial services gives Jem HR a broader role in the workplace.
For an employer, the platform can help with staff communication and HR tasks. For a worker, it can provide access to pay information and financial tools in the same place.
The Company Has Already Raised Capital
The $8.4 million Series A adds to the capital Jem HR has received from investors.
The company had previously raised more than $3.4 million from backers that include E4E, LoftyInc Capital, Creator Ventures, Musha Ventures, Launch Africa and Harambeans Prosperity Fund, along with individual investors from the HR, fintech and technology sectors.
Jem HR also closed a R60 million pre-Series A round in 2025. That deal included equity led by NEXT176, an Old Mutual subsidiary, as well as a R30 million private debt facility.
The company said that capital would help it grow beyond Southern Africa, add to its team and improve its platform.
The debt facility also gave Jem HR room to add new products for deskless employees.
Why the New Funding Matters
The $8.4 million Series A gives Jem HR more room to pursue its wider goal.
One major target is expansion. The company has already built a presence in South Africa, but its long-term plan reaches beyond one country.
Africa has a very large workforce, and many people work in jobs where normal office software does not fit their daily routine. This creates a large possible market for a service that works through a tool such as WhatsApp.
Jem HR can also use the new capital to improve its software and add more services. Better HR tools could help companies save time, while better financial products could give employees more support.
A Different Approach to HR Software
The HR software market has many large platforms, but Jem HR has chosen a more specific path.
Rather than build only for office staff, the company has placed frontline employees at the centre of its product.
This approach came from the founders’ early experience with earned wage access. The company found that workers liked access to payslips, company messages and wage services through WhatsApp. Employers also gained a simple way to reach people who did not use office email.
That discovery helped Jem HR change its focus from one financial product to a broader HR system.
What Comes Next for Jem HR
The next phase will test how far Jem HR can take this model.
The company has a large potential audience, a growing product set and a platform built for a group that has often received less attention from enterprise software firms.
The $8.4 million Series A can give the startup the financial support it needs to expand its reach, improve its technology and add more services.
The bigger goal is clear. Jem HR wants to become more than a tool for payslips or early wage access. It wants to become a complete workplace platform for people who work away from desks.
If the company can keep its service simple while it adds more features, it may have a strong chance to grow across Africa and other markets.
For now, the new funding marks another major step for a startup that began with a simple wage-access product and grew into a broader HR and employee-benefits platform. Its focus on frontline workers gives it a clear identity in a crowded HR technology market, while WhatsApp gives it a familiar way to connect companies with their employees.
